NetApp and VMware have spent the past 20 years defining the virtualized datacenter to deliver trusted storage and virtualized infrastructure solutions, all in a unified digital environment that unlocks performance, efficiency, and cost savings for virtualized applications. Even though both NetApp and VMware have solutions that integrate with the world’s leading cloud providers, it hasn't been possible to have a VMware environment running in the cloud with NetApp datastores, meaning businesses were missing out on the same flexibility, management and data movement of traditional VMware virtual machines and applications that they had with their on-premises infrastructure.
Today Microsoft have announced the availability of Azure NetApp files datastores for Azure VMware solution (currently in public preview).
With this functionality you will now be able to attach your respective NetApp Cloud storage solution in Azure using Azure NetApp Files (ANF) to VMware Cloud via the traditional datastore approach. This provides on-premises-like features and the functionality of an on-premises VMware hypervisor with NetApp ONTAP storage volumes mounted as datastores in Azure VMware Solution (AVS). This results in a lower TCO and gives you the flexibility to grow or shrink your storage landscape in near real time as business needs change.

Update:
Azure is still in public preview
It is now also available in AWS (GA). Using NFS datastores with Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP (FSxN).
GCP is still a work in progress
