Data storage ready for the modern world
As we move into summer 2023, the IT industry is continuing to experience a severe lack of skilled workers, and the economic climate is still uncertain as a result of the conflict in Ukraine. Energy prices remain high, and cyber risks have grown significantly, all of which are wreaking havoc on IT budgets and plans.

Whilst we may be at a turning point with inflation and the global economy, digital transformation projects are still untenable for many organisations.
With this in mind, NetApp have announced their new innovation priorities for 2023. Through 4 core technologies and innovations, NetApp's updated portfolio can help organisations solve their data storage challenges and address current macro trends through operation simplicity and automated ITOps, built-in security to manage and recover from ransomware threats, and flash storage backed by guaranteed efficiencies to meet or exceed sustainability and savings goals.

New NetApp ASA - All-Flash SAN Array
NetApp is already the leader in NAS, and whilst over 20,000 customers also trust NetApp with their SAN workloads, 5000 customers use NetApp controllers for SAN-only workloads, meaning they're potentially adding IT complexity and over paying for a unified system that they're not fully utilising. To address this, NetApp released the ASA array several years ago.
Today's release sees the new ASA line up, a modern all-flash SAN storage family, dedicated to mission-critical block workloads making it ideal for VMware and database applications. The highlight of this release for me is that ONTAP One for SAN is now included with every new ASA system (see below).

Modern - The ASA is an active-active, All-NVMe storage array providing comprehensive data services. As with the FAS and AFF families, it is also cloud connected, offering future-proof ownership through the NetApp Advance program.
High-Availability Guaranteed - All ASA arrays use symmetric active-active architecture typically found only on the most cost-prohibitive high-end arrays meaning all paths are active (optimised) at the same time. During a controller failover, the host doesn't experience any downtime, so there is no disruption to I/O meaning NetApp can now offer a 99.9999% data availability guarantee - subject to terms and conditions.
Efficiency Guaranteed - Comes standard with a 4:1 storage efficiency guarantee, making it the leading raw-to-effective capacity SAN-only array on the market.
Secure and Protected - Through NetApp's efficient snapshot technology and built-in ransomware protection you can recover rapidly from ransomware attacks, and protect against disasters with business continuity across sites.
Sustainable - Improved power consumption is built-in, delivering 30% to 113% lower power usage and equivalent emissions compared with a major competitor.

Based on existing hardware, the ASA family comes in 5 models as shown below offering capacities from 15.2TBs to 87.6PBs raw.

ONTAP One Update
ONTAP One was announced in February 2023 for the new C-Series family of capacity flash storage. With ONTAP One, you can access NetApp's robust suite of security features and all the features that ONTAP offers without worrying about licensing barriers.
As of today, ONTAP One is now included with every new AFF (A-Series and C-Series), All-SAN Array (ASA), and FAS system, meaning every ONTAP based hardware platform from NetApp now has a simple, easy-to-buy, easy-to-consume software scheme. One price, no add-ons. As simple as it gets!
If you only want the base features on ONTAP without the bells and whistles, then you can just purchase a new system with ONTAP Base.

Ransomware Recovery Guarantee
The NetApp Ransomware Recovery Guarantee leverages ONTAP’s unique combination of key built-in security and ransomware protection features. ONTAP can automatically block known malicious file types, block rogue admins and malicious users with multi-admin verification, and provide tamper-proof snapshots that can’t be deleted – even by the storage administrator. With ONTAP’s industry-leading autonomous ransomware protection, attacks can be detected, additional snapshots are taken immediately, and recovery can occur in a matter of minutes. Given this unparalleled combination of technologies, NetApp will now warrant snapshot data recovery in the event of a ransomware attack. In the event that data copies can’t be recovered with help from NetApp or partner assistance, NetApp will offer compensation*.
With ONTAP One, all systems now get the strongest anti-ransomware suit of any enterprise storage system included at no additional charge, allowing organisations to protect, discover and recover from a ransomware attacks within minutes.
You can watch a video about the new guarantee here: www.netapp.com/cyber-resilience/ransomware-protection/
Furthermore, NetApp will now guarantee snapshot data recovery in the event of a ransomware attack! - subject to terms and conditions.

Note: No ransomware detection or prevention system can completely guarantee safety from a ransomware attack. Whilst it's possible an attack might go undetected, NetApp technology acts as an important additional layer of defense.
NetApp Advance Update
To recap, the NetApp Advance is an innovative portfolio of programs and guarantees that gives customers the confidence that the storage they purchase today will evolve with them into the future, providing greater flexibility, improved return on investment (ROI), and reduced TCO.
The model simplifies and improves the ownership experience by providing a subscription to ongoing hardware innovations through controller upgrades, and/or upgrades to cloud storage if/when ready.
This program has now been updated to include the ransomware recovery guarantee, and the 6 nines of data available guarantee for ASA as shown below.
